Giants Likely to Go After Jordan Zimmermann in Free Agency

WASHINGTON — One team likely to express interest in free agent-pitcher-to-be Jordan Zimmerman this offseason, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, is the San Francisco Giants.

That’s right, the win-the-World Series-every-other-year San Francisco Giants are still in it … to win it.

This nugget was buried near the bottom of Rosenthal’s weekly notebook:

Add Nationals right-hander Jordan Zimmermann to the list of free-agent starters that the Giants are likely to consider this offseason — though Zimmermann, a native of Wisconsin, might prefer to return to the Midwest.

Zimmermann, 29, will be near the head of the pack of a loaded free agency market entering 2016, which will be co-headlined by pitchers David Price and Johnny Cueto.

It’s important to note how extremely early it is to put much stock into these reports, however intriguing. Remember, 2014 brought the intense rumor the Nationals had been close to trading Zimmermann to the Chicago Cubs, and that was December. It also never happened.

Theoretically, every team in the majors could consider pursuing Zimmermann, to varying degrees of likelihood. Still, worth keeping an eye on.

Zimmermann had already turned down the Nationals’ long-term extension offer, making his departure through free agency seem all the more likely.

Zimmermann, though his 3.54 ERA has dipped from 2.66 in 2014, has been an absolute rock — on a roster riddled with extensive injuries — for the Nationals, and is on pace to finish his fourth straight season with nearly 200 innings.
