WASHINGTON — The Nationals played a fairly disastrous first three innings against the Boston Red Sox Monday afternoon.
With Jordan Zimmermann on the hill, Washington allowed eight runs off Boston’s bats in innings one through three, without scoring any of their own, leaving themselves in need to far exceed their current two-runs-a-game average to avoid a 2-5 start to the 2015 season.
Zimmermann was pulled in the third inning after the score climbed to 8-0. His day ended with a pitching line of 2.1 innings pitched, 9 hits, 8 runs (7 earned), a base on balls and no strikeouts.
It’s also been a rough Fenway debut for Nationals rookie Michael Taylor.
Rex Sox outfielder Mookie Betts is having himself a day.

The Nationals were able to get two runs on the board in the fifth inning, thanks to a Ryan Zimmerman solo shot over the 17-foot center field wall and some heady base running by Clint Robinson, who hit a triple and scored on a fielder’s choice.
But then in the sixth, left-handed David Ortiz would hit a home run over the left-center field end of the green monster to make the score 9-2.
